Bluetooth Low Energy is a standard designed for the devices that operate on a coin cell battery. It is an emerging low power wireless technology developed specifically for short range communications. Due to its increasing application areas, Bluetooth Low Energy is gaining popularity in the market these days. One existing example of Bluetooth Low Energy application is Heart Rate Monitor which is very popular in the health sector.
Apart from this, BLE is targeted to be used in millions of devices in the near future. So, we can easily understand the importance of BLE for Internet of things i.e. the next wave in the era of computing where most of the objects that surround us will be on the internet.
Now question is that how can we use BLE for internet of things?
Here is a very general concept about Internet of Things i.e. Things have data and Web Services want this data over Internet. Now, BLE is used to connect these two services. But question is still the same that how?
Let us discuss on this!
Basically, the key idea behind the functionality is that the devices which support BLE gateway functionality needs to provide a transparent medium from that device to the IP address. Middle-ware present at that IP address can access the device directly considering that collector is talking to it locally. Gateway device performs no other functionality apart from acting as a medium. But presently there is no standard defined for generic gateways. Research is going on standardization of the gateway and making the world an “INTERNET OF THINGS”.
